Trump believes it might be best to "let them fight for a while" and compares Russia and Ukraine to toddlers

 

US President Donald Trump Thursday compared Russia and Ukraine to two fighting children who needed to work out their differences before anyone could intervene.


 

“Sometimes you see two young children fighting like crazy,” Trump remarked during a news conference at the Oval Office. “They hate each other, and they’re fighting in a park, and you try and pull them apart. They don’t want to be pulled. Sometimes you’re better off letting them fight for a while and then pulling them apart.”

He added that he had given the same analogy to Putin the previous day: “I said, ‘President, maybe you have to keep fighting and suffering a lot, because both sides are suffering, before you pull them apart, before they’re able to be pulled apart.’”


While Trump had repeatedly claimed during his campaign that he could end the war within 24 hours, he now admitted he had been sarcastic. When asked about additional sanctions on Russia, he equivocated, stating he would act when the time felt right.


He even hinted that Ukraine might face consequences. “We’ll be very, very, very tough, and it could be on both countries to be honest,” he said. “You know, it takes two to tango.”


Trump had made a few recent comments about the war and ignored Ukraine’s recent drone attack on nuclear-capable bombers inside Russia. Although he had previously called Putin “absolutely crazy,” his tone shifted.


Last month, he had suggested giving the Russian leader “two weeks” to show progress but later abandoned the timeline altogether. In his latest social media post, he simply relayed Putin’s intent to retalia
